Life coaches are often thought of similarly to therapists and counselors. While all three share some similarities and are considered "helping professions," the role of a live coach is unique in how it approaches clients and overall outcomes.

Where therapy and counseling focus primarily on the past and present when working with clients, life coaching is centered almost entirely on the present and future, using a starting point to create action-based plans that can help people succeed, grow, and become more effective in all areas of life. Rather than assisting clients to feel better as therapy aims to do, life coaching inspires clients to do better by developing a clear plan of how to get there.

Often, people hire a life coach when navigating a significant transition—like pivoting careers, moving somewhere new, or entering a new season of life. Clients may want to increase their leadership skills or confidence level. Other times, clients seek life coaching because they feel ‘stuck’ in ways they can’t quite describe.
Life coaching can help individuals improve their self-awareness, develop new skills, create a plan for achieving their goals, clarify their values, and overcome obstacles that may hold them back from success.
Life coaching sessions can vary in length, but typically last between 30 minutes to an hour. The frequency of sessions can also vary depending on the needs of the client.
